Statistics from My Web Site...

So... how many people visit my web site? Who are they? Your browser gives information to web sites: which page you are looking at, how long you look at it, what kind of computer and browser you use, which online service you're using, and which country and sometimes, which city you are in. Here's some stats about my site.

• In a typical month, there are about 100,000 unique visitors from 159 countries.
• Most of you live in the USA (65%), followed by (in this order) Canada, Sweden, Germany, UK, Australia, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Japan, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Korea, and Israel.
• There are 5,500 subscribers to my more-or-less monthly newsletter.
• Most traffic comes from search engines (70%, followed by links from other sites (18%) and direct traffic (12%).
• Of the search engine traffic: Google = 88%, Yahoo = 6%. Ask = 3%, Microsoft = 1%.
• 60% use IE and 30% use Firefox.
• 6% use monitors at 800x600 resolution; the rest of you have larger screens.

The most popular pages are:

• FAQ on Hokusai (26,600 visitors)
• My Account of the Fall of the Berlin Wall (18,000 visitors)
• The Blog FAQ (10,800 visitors)
• The CAT User's Manual (4,900 visitors)

The most popular sections are (of course) the pages about jobs and employment, plus the section about web technology and tools.

Using Google Analytics and its site overlay tool, I restructured my links to put the most popular links at the top. With analytics, I increased my traffic about 30%.
