Job StuffI was the National Director of the Tech Writer Trade Group for the NWU for ten years. Yep, it was a UAW-affiliated trade union. Members asked these questions so here are pages about jobs, job hunting in Silicon Valley, and living and working in Silicon Valley. My parents and their generation could go to college, get a degree, and then work in that profession their whole life. My dad was a doctor for fifty years. Those good ol' days are over. No profession lasts more than five years now. Technology evolves too fast. And there's offshoring. You should read The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman. I live and work in Silicon Valley. In 2005, I co-founded a startup and we bought a 30-person company in Bangalore, which has grown to more than 175 staff employess in India. What Friedman writes about Silicon Valley, India, and technology is correct. Many Americans think they will have a good life because, well, they're Americans and the USA is #1. Someone is about to pull off the blankets. Our team in India have degrees in computer science, engineering, or physics and many of them have MBAs as well. They are motivated, bright, and they love to work. One billion Indians will work very hard to figure out how to take over every meaningful job and market in the USA and Europe. Just as the USA today is very different from the USA in the 50s and 60s, the USA will change in the next ten to twenty years. India and China will be technological and economic megapowers.
