The Bush Bug

This a font bug in Microsoft IE for Windows. Look at the word Washington below: The left side of the W is cropped off. Amusingly, this happens only if the W is the first letter in a table and is it in Arial 11-points. It doesn't happen at 10 points nor 12 points, nor other letters (such as Yosemite and Vermont.) Nor does it happen on Macintosh browsers (thanks, Mark.) The bug is fairly widespread on the web. Several months ago, I sent a bug report to Microsoft, but they've not fixed this. Since it only happens with the letter W, I've named it the Bush Bug.

Washington

There are three workarounds.

  1. Resize the font to either 10 points or 12 points.
  2. Increase cellpadding to 1.
  3. Don't use words that start with W :-)
